What Happens on Installation Day

Arrival, protecting your home, core drilling, pipework, vacuum testing, commissioning and handover. What actually happens when air conditioning goes in.

Before the day

You will know who is coming and roughly when. Clear access to the wall where the indoor unit goes and to the outside position, and if there is anything fragile nearby, move it or tell us and we will.

1. Arrival and protection

Floors and furniture covered before anything comes out of the van. We agree the exact position of the indoor unit with you and mark it, and confirm where the outdoor unit is going, before we drill anything.

2. The indoor unit

The mounting plate is fixed and levelled properly. A unit that is not level will drip, because the condensate tray relies on gravity.

3. Core drilling

One neat core through the wall for the pipework and drain, angled very slightly downwards so water always runs out rather than in. Dust is contained at the point of drilling rather than swept up afterwards, and the hole is sleeved and sealed on both sides.

4. The outdoor unit

Mounted on brackets or a plinth, level, with clearance around it for airflow, and with anti-vibration mounts so it does not transmit noise into the building.

5. Pipework and drainage

Refrigerant lines run and fully insulated — uninsulated pipe sweats and drips. The condensate drain is set with a continuous fall along its whole length. Externally, pipework goes in trunking, straight and level.

6. Vacuum and leak test

The part you cannot see and the part that matters most. The system is pulled down to a deep vacuum and held there, which proves it is airtight and pulls out moisture. Moisture left in a refrigerant circuit forms acid and destroys the compressor over time.

If the vacuum does not hold, there is a leak and we find it before charging. Skipping or rushing this is the single most common reason a system fails early.

7. Charging and commissioning

Refrigerant charged to the manufacturer's weight. Running pressures and temperatures checked and recorded, in both cooling and heating modes.

8. Handover

We show you how the controls work — properly, not by handing you a remote. F-Gas records completed, warranty registered with the manufacturer on your behalf, and the room left as we found it.

Questions

How long will you be in my home?

A single room is usually one day, arriving morning and finished by late afternoon. Multi-room systems are two to three days.

How much mess will there be?

One core hole per indoor unit, drilled with dust contained and made good both sides. Floors and furniture covered throughout.

Do I need to be there the whole time?

No, but we do need you at the start to agree positions and at the end for handover.

Can you run the pipework out of sight?

Wherever the building allows. Where it has to run externally it goes in trunking on the least visible elevation.
