The rooms people actually fit it in
Bedrooms
The most common request by a distance, and the one where noise matters most. A modern inverter unit on its lowest setting is about as loud as a quiet conversation, and because inverters modulate rather than switching hard on and off, they spend most of the night at that setting. People sleep with them running without thinking about it.
Loft conversions
Lofts are the worst room in the house in summer and often the worst in winter too — they sit directly under the roof with heat pouring in above, and they are usually at the very end of a heating circuit that was never designed to reach them. One unit solves both problems, which is why loft conversions are such a natural fit.
Home offices and garden rooms
A room you sit in for eight hours needs to be genuinely comfortable, not approximately. Garden rooms in particular are often built with minimal heating and no cooling at all, and a single unit makes them usable all year.
Extensions and conservatories
Extensions frequently sit at the end of a long pipe run with radiators sized for the original house. Rather than re-plumbing the heating to reach them, a single air conditioning unit heats and cools that room independently — and it is usually the cheaper job.
How it looks
Indoor units are slim, white and sit high on a wall. They are visible, and we will not pretend otherwise — but they are considerably less obtrusive than people expect, and there are floor-standing and ceiling cassette options where a wall unit would look wrong. It heats too, and that changes the maths
Run in reverse, an air conditioner delivers roughly three units of warmth for every unit of electricity, because it moves heat rather than making it. For a room your central heating has never handled well, that makes it cheaper to run than an electric heater and often cheaper than extending the heating to reach it.

Questions
Is it noisy enough to stop me sleeping?
No. Modern inverter units on a low setting are about as loud as a quiet conversation, and they run on a low setting most of the time.
Will it look ugly?
Indoor units are slim and white and sit high on the wall. Where a wall unit would look wrong there are floor-standing and ceiling options.
Can one unit do two rooms?
Not well. Air conditioning cools the room it is in. For several rooms you want a multi-split system, which runs several indoor units from one outdoor unit.
Does it work in winter?
Yes, and efficiently. Most modern systems are air-to-air heat pumps and heat as well as they cool.
