Air conditioning cannot be priced sensibly from a phone call, and anybody who offers to is guessing. The cost depends far more on your building than on the equipment: how far the refrigerant pipework has to run, where the outdoor unit can sit without bothering you or a neighbour, whether the wall is solid or cavity, and how easy the outside of the property is to reach.

So we come and look. It is free, it takes under an hour, and you get a written price afterwards with everything itemised. Nothing is booked until you have read it and said yes.

Sizing the system properly

An air conditioner that is too small will run flat out on the hottest day and never quite get there. One that is too big is worse than people expect: it cools the air fast, switches off, and never runs long enough to pull the humidity out, so the room ends up cold and clammy rather than comfortable.

We size on the actual room — floor area, ceiling height, how much glass it has and which way that glass faces, insulation, and what the room is used for. A south-facing loft conversion with a roof window needs considerably more than a north-facing bedroom of the same size.

Where the outdoor unit goes

This is the decision that matters most and the one most often rushed. The outdoor unit needs airflow around it, somewhere it will not be blasting warm air at a seating area, and enough distance from a neighbour's window that it never becomes a conversation.

It also affects the price, because the further it sits from the indoor unit, the more refrigerant pipework has to be run and concealed. We will show you the options at the survey rather than deciding for you on the day.

The tidy finish

Pipework is concealed wherever the building allows. Where it has to run externally it goes in trunking, straight and level, on the least visible elevation we can use. Floors and furniture are covered before we start, and the core drilling dust is contained rather than swept up afterwards.

It sounds like a small thing. It is the difference between an installation you forget about and one you look at every day.
